Deux ans après avoir présenté La Cenerentola de Rossini à l’Opéra de Limoges en 2017, la metteuse en scène Sandrine Anglade y revient avec une partition plus rare : Die Tote Stadt d’Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Cet opéra librement adapté du drame Le Mirage, lui-même transposé du roman Bruges-la-Morte de Georges Rodenbach, constitue un matériau de choix pour tout metteur en scène tant il fait partie de ces œuvres attachantes et comme nimbées de mystère. Dans Bruges à l’atmosphère brumeuse déambule Paul, qui vit dans le souvenir obsessionnel de sa femme défunte, Marie, et croit la voir se réincarner sous les traits de la danseuse Marietta. Musiques post-romantique et symboliste évoquent irrésistiblement Wagner ou Richard Strauss. La partition écrite à 20 ans rendit Korngold célèbre en Europe et même aux Etats-Unis. C’était en 1920. Presque vingt ans plus tard, la musique du compositeur sera décrétée « dégénérée » (entartete Musik) par les nazis…
