L’idée originale est de Barthélémy Fortier et Hugo Randrianatoavina. Un jour, le comédien raconte son projet de spectacle au metteur en scène, qui se tourne vers l’auteur Alexandre Cordier pour en formaliser l’écriture. Ainsi est né Diego, « seul-en-scène sportif » qui ouvre sur le destin d’un jeune homme né le 12 juillet 1998, le jour où la France est sacrée championne du monde de football. Prénommé Diego pour rendre hommage au célèbre joueur argentin, ce personnage voit planer sur son existence « le spectre du football, de son milieu social, de son enfance, de son père, et de Diego Maradona ». Jusqu’au jour où il réalise qu’il peut (re)prendre le contrôle de sa vie, qu’il n’est pas condamné à devenir celui que l’on voudrait qu’il soit. Il nous entraîne dans une réflexion sur le choix et le non-choix, la réussite et l’émancipation, le libre-arbitre et la chute.
