« Dies irae est un poème qui m’accompagne depuis plusieurs années (…) avec toujours la même fascination pour cette parole simple et étrange », dit Guillaume Cantillon. Auteur d’envergure, photographe visionnaire et conscience prémonitoire des affres du XXème siècle, Leonid Andreïev est l’auteur d’une œuvre qui emprunte autant au pessimisme lucide de Schopenhauer qu’aux visions fantastiques et à l’exubérance macabre de Poe, qu’il admirait. « Libre chant des jours terribles de la justice et du châtiment », Dies irae déploie la parole de Geronimo Pascagna, assassin, prophète, poète et fou, qui raconte le cataclysme qui s’est abattu sur les murs de sa prison, son errance à travers les ruines, son amour de la liberté, et comment les gendarmes l’ont repris. C’est alors qu’il invoque le diable et prédit un nouveau cataclysme, jour de colère et fin du monde. Par un traitement plastique de l’espace et en utilisant la lumière et le son comme compagnons de jeu, Guillaume Cantillon fait entendre « la beauté, le lyrisme et l’énergie déployée dans l’écriture d’Andreïev ».
