Long voyage vers la nuit emprunte ses personnages et son intrigue à la vie de son auteur. Cette journée passée entre la mère, le père et les deux fils, a tout d’une autobiographie : O’Neill y raconte la fausse gloire de son père, la morphinomanie de sa mère, le ratage existentiel de son frère, et son propre cheminement vers et dans l’écriture. Lars Norén, fasciné par la pièce de l’écrivain américain, en propose, soixante ans après, la suite et le miroir dans Embrasser les ombres, « exemple sans doute unique, à travers l’hommage ambivalent, œdipien, d’un dramaturge à son aîné, d’un dialogue humain et littéraire par-delà les années », dit Jean-Claude Seguin. Considérant qu’on ne peut pas monter l’une de ces deux pièces sans faire référence à l’autre, le metteur en scène a choisi de les agencer en diptyque, afin de doublement éclairer les thèmes qu’elles évoquent : l’enfance, la famille, la liberté individuelle, la filiation, les sources de la création et les rapports entre le réel et la vie rêvée.
Portraits croisés, entre aube et crépuscule
Embrasser les ombres retrouve la famille O’Neill, une génération plus tard. Edmund (prénom que choisit Eugene pour se désigner dans Long voyage vers la nuit) est devenu un auteur reconnu et couronné. Atteint par la maladie de Parkinson, il vit avec Carlotta, sa troisième femme, dans sa maison de Marblehead, retiré loin du monde. Le jour de ses soixante ans, il reçoit ses deux fils, doubles tragiques de son frère et de sa mère. Les incompréhensions, les empoignades et les reproches se répètent d’une génération à l’autre, avec une violence plus exacerbée encore et un humour noir qui fait tendre la tragédie vers la farce. Jours pairs et jours impairs, les mêmes comédiens s’emparent de ces deux partitions jumelles, et explorent la part obscure qu’elles interrogent, dans cette nuit de l’amour et de la haine, transfigurée par le théâtre.
