« Je me souviens qu’entre l’instant où je venais de finir silencieusement la lecture de [Discours de l’Indien rouge] – un des rares textes en prose du poète – et l’instant où je savais que je le dirai un jour à haute voix devant un public, il s’est écoulé quelque chose comme une nanoseconde », raconte Mohamed Rouabhi. C’est par le biais de la Revue d’Etudes Palestiniennes qu’eut lieu ce choc littéraire, en 1993. Un choc « d’une violente évidence » qui donna effectivement naissance à une création théâtrale, création d’à peine une heure mettant ce premier texte en regard avec Une Mémoire pour l’oubli. C’est aujourd’hui à la Maison de la Poésie que le comédien et metteur en scène donne « une deuxième vie à ce spectacle, un second souffle, de nouveaux jours ». En dénonçant la violence mortelle de la guerre et la souffrance de l’exil – depuis les terres arrachées aux Indiens d’Amérique jusqu’aux rues de Beyrouth assiégées, en août 1982, par les Israéliens – Mahmoud Darwich continue bien sûr à parler du destin de la Palestine, des blessures et des cicatrices d’un peuple qui, comme le peuple indien, vit son rapport à la terre de façon à la fois sacrée et politique. C’est toute la beauté et la puissance des écrits du poète palestinien qui s’exprime ici. Un poète qui, jusqu’à sa disparition en 2008, a chanté « l’exil, la guerre, la prison, l’amour ».
