Au commencement, ils étaient trois. Trois anonymes qui patientaient dans un hall d’aéroport. Trois étrangers qui ne parlaient pas la même langue. Puis les instruments de musique firent leur apparition et l’échange fut immédiat. Tel est le point de départ de cette création attachante signée du Sud-africain Dizu Plaatjies. Fondateur et leader quinze ans durant du groupe de percussions chouchou de Nelson Mandela (Amampondo), ce couteau suisse de la musique (chant, marimbas, percussions, flûtes, m’bira) s’est lancé il y a quelques années dans une carrière solo partageuse, où l’envie de transmettre l’emporte sur le besoin d’acquérir.
Confluences
Avec “Umculoweth”, le multi-instrumentiste confronte ainsi son art et sa culture avec ceux de jeunes jazzmen hexagonaux aux CV déjà bien remplis : la saxophoniste-flûtiste Lisa Cat-Berro et le pianiste Armel Dupas – l’une a accompagné Rhoda Scott, Yves Robert ou encore Isabelle Olivier, l’autre navigue entre la scène (Henri Texier, Glenn Ferris) et le cinéma (Christophe Honoré, Arnaud Desplechin). Et la confrontation de la musique traditionnelle africaine avec la musique improvisée européenne fait des merveilles : amusants et touchants, les trois musiciens réussissent avec brio à initier petits et grands aux subtilités des instruments sub-sahariens à l’aide de compositions délicates. Mis en scène par Kên Higelin qui avait déjà échafaudé les spectacles de Khalid K. dans ce même théâtre d’Ivry, “Umculoweth” offre un moment de fraîcheur stimulant et familial.
