« "Vas-y pleure, si tu dois : nous sommes en famille ! C’est à huis clos, mais tout le monde est le bienvenu, seuls les chiens doivent rester dehors. » Pour un début, ça cogne fort ! Meg Stuart ne s’embarrasse guère de ces convenances apprêtées qui brodent l’art en frises décoratives. Pas son genre. La danseuse et chorégraphe américaine fait plutôt craquer les coutures univoques des discours bien ficelés et gangrène les standards d’une époque normée sous surveillance. Depuis qu’elle a débarqué en Europe en 1991 avec Disfigure Study, elle trame le fil d’une œuvre singulière, qui écorche vif les apparences sociales plus ou moins joliment vernissées. Radicale, à l’écart des modes comme des postures, sa danse met en scène des états de corps qui révèlent l’humanité défigurée à force d’ingurgiter des ersatz de bonheur frelatés. Elle laisse échapper confusément les gestes du désastre intérieur, la beauté sinistrée, les défaillances, et souvent se désagrège, contaminée par le chaos du monde.
Une étrange saga domestique
Hôte de la Volksbühne de Berlin à l’invitation de Frank Castorf, Meg Stuart a composé une étrange saga domestique. Do Animals Cry commence donc ainsi : par une sarabande en pantoufles et pyjamas, où les membres d’une drôle de maison s’amusent à endosser des rôles différents – père, mère ou enfant. Et dans le maelström infernal, chacun défend son droit à la régression, promène sa fantaisie, exhibe sa panoplie de souvenirs, finalement trace sa trajectoire. Tous se retrouvent dans le rire, qui s’échappe souvent en éclats nauséabonds, se transforme en lutte au corps à corps. Puis ils s’en vont, se disloquent, reviennent, changent de rôle, se fondent dans les portraits de famille qu’ils abandonnent aussitôt. Remuante, pleine des jeux tapageurs d’enfance, la danse enfonce le poing aux creux des failles intimes, comme pour mieux rompre l’hypocrisie sociale et la reproduction du modèle des aînés.
