Victor Gauthier-Martin s’empare du mythe de Faust avec vigueur – via The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus de Marlowe – pour évoquer notre temps présent, plus ou moins vendu aux forces de la destruction dans le mépris entendu des valeurs humaines. Homme de la Renaissance, Faust aspire à une puissance sans bornes, à la connaissance illimitée et à la jouissance esthétique, soit l’humanisme contre la religion. Mais ce qui fragilise en profondeur le théologien de génie, c’est que la recherche de la connaissance chez lui est subordonnée à la volonté de puissance et au désir de richesse. Faust vend son âme au diable – à Lucifer -, la preuve même du gouffre insondable du mal capable d’investir tout homme. L’enjeu de la pièce consiste à rappeler que chacun doit choisir et engager sa liberté entre le bien et le mal. Faustus qu’interprète avec cœur Philippe Demarle, abandonne la théologie au profit de la magie – la magie noire – qui implique l’usage de l’héroïne et autres. À ses oreilles, résonne la voix du bon ange, celle du mauvais ange dessine la ligne de prédestination du héros épique, sa fin et sa damnation programmées. Faust voulait l’immortalité de la vie pour l’homme ; il n’obtient que l’éternité dans la mort.
Le grotesque l’emporte sur la tragédie
Emporté par cette vision de cauchemar, Victor Gauthier-Martin n’a fait confiance qu’en l’illusion dispensée par les régies de la vidéo et du son, les caméras sur trépied, les micros HF, les écrans, les câbles et les vidéo projecteurs, les tréteaux et les praticables sur roulettes. Un fatras d’ambiance festival. Le laboratoire de Faust pourrait être un cabinet dentaire avec son fauteuil de patient qui fait office de cheval d’arçon. Les images jouent plutôt bien des simulacres et des faux-semblants, des trompe-l’œil et autres mensonges. Il manque une vraie dramatisation du propos, la peur et le doute qui façonnent les questionnements du magicien et les assauts de ses regrets. La dimension grotesque du spectacle l’emporte sur la tragédie elle-même : le comique n’est plus utilisé en contrepoint ironique, il s’impose comme vertu. L’oscillation originelle du drame élisabéthain entre le bien et le mal penche du côté de la chute et du reniement de soi. Depuis l’intérieur d’une Boîte de Pandore, l’apparition des sept péchés capitaux esquisse un numéro de cabaret burlesque néo- gothique. « Quel est le sens de ce spectacle ? », entend-on au cours de la représentation. Aucun : l’enfer n’a pas de limites et les hommes sont toujours prêts à faire la guerre. La belle Hélène, le Pape et Charles-Quint sont là pour l’attester…
