Confortablement calé dans le quotidien moelleux d’une existence bourgeoise au cœur du Stockholm des années 1900, le docteur Glas filait des jours tranquilles, entre diners en ville, promenades à cheval et discussions de salon. Jusqu’au jour où Helga, belle et jeune épouse du vieux pasteur Gregorius, vint à sa consultation et lui confia les assauts qu’elle subissait dans sa vie conjugale. En publiant Docteur Glas en 1905, l’auteur suédois Hjalmar Söderberg signait un texte dérangeant, combinant les élans de la passion, les réflexions sur la condition féminine, la mission humaniste du médecin, la liberté d’aimer et d’être aimé. Révélant la violence masquée par habitude sous le fard des apparences, il écornait les mœurs et l’hypocrisie de la « bonne » société de son temps.
Droits des femmes dans le mariage
« Son chef-d’œuvre abordait des problématiques sociales et morales qui allaient préoccuper tout le 20ème siècle, et jusqu’à nos jours – les droits des femmes dans le mariage, le rôle de la religion dans la vie publique et privée, l’avortement, le suicide assisté, l’eugénisme, et plus important que tout, le droit d’aimer et d’être aimé. » souligne Hélène Darche. Dans une scénographie épurée qui évoque le milieu bourgeois de l’époque, la metteuse en scène guide Sofia Maria Efraimsson et John Paval dans un duo déchirant.
