Un rif électrique déchire la pénombre d’un seul éclat : Doctor Faustus a pactisé avec Mephisto pour gagner la lumière contre son âme. Mais « la lumière, si fort qu’elle éclaire n’est jamais que la lumière… ». Marché de dupes. L’abusé désabusé finit par douter même du doute et s’égare vers nulle part, quêtant l’éternel salut en enfer. Composé en 1938 alors que Gertrude Stein creuse la forme dramatique, Doctor Faustus lights the lights compile des bribes de récit, des chansons, des parties chorales dans un jeu de variations et d’allitérations qui fait surgir au tournant d’une scène Marguerite Ida & Hélène Annabelle, Mr Overseas Man, le petit garçon, la petite fille et le chien. L’écrivaine américaine sacrée « papesse de l’avant-garde » se glisse ainsi dans les tours et détours du mythe, pour en détourer les figures qu’elle embarque dans son infinie ritournelle, jusqu’à retourner et tournebouler les questions d’identité.
Glam et rock
Sous les notes de Rodolphe Burger, le conte mélancolique s’enflamme et prend des accents furieusement rock. Plutôt que reproduire le formalisme des structures répétitives du texte, le chanteur et guitariste, ici compositeur, décale cet opéra vers la pop, soutenu par les éclairages et l’esthétique glam, cuir et fumigènes, qui dessinent ce monde artificiel. Les acteurs-chanteurs, étonnantes bêtes de scène, notamment Valérie Dashwood (Marguerite Ida & Helena Annabel), Samuel Réhault (Doctor Faustus) et Juan Cocho (Mephisto), attrapent à bras le corps la partition dans l’adaptation d’Olivier Cadiot qui s’amuse avec les motifs mélodiques et rythmiques de l’écriture. Orchestrée par le metteur en scène Ludovic Lagarde, cette chic version concert dissout sans doute un peu de l’œuvre mais procure un plaisir diablement ludique.
