La silhouette insolente, tendue par la morgue musclée d’un désir à vif, la faconde volontiers provocante et les sens toujours à l’affût d’une proie nouvelle… Ce Dom Juan-là défie crânement le ciel du haut de ses vingt ans, refusant de châtrer ses envies et de régler sa conduite sur la morale hypocrite du pouvoir, qu’il soit religieux, politique ou paternel. Aimanté par l’instant, son destin vague au gré des rencontres, détourne ici une demoiselle, là une paysanne. Jamais le noble infidèle ne s’embarrasse des devoirs de l’honneur, ni de gratitude ou de loyauté, préférant la consommation immédiate aux brumeuses perspectives de l’avenir. Délivré de la pesanteur du temps, incapable pourtant de jouir du présent, sans cesse en quête d’une félicité qu’il fuit sitôt qu’effleurée, Dom Juan épuise ses jours en vaines battues et habiles dérobades. Flanqué de Sganarelle, pleutre valet désabusé mais bien aimable, il s’abandonne à la misogynie et rejoue infiniment la séduction des femmes, abandonnées dès que possédées, comme pour défaire les nœuds de toute histoire qui pourrait s’enfanter.
Misogynie indémodable
C’est ainsi que se dessine le personnage dans la mise en scène de Marc Sussi, directeur du Jeune Théâtre National, qui, à plus de cinquante ans, se confronte pour la première fois au plateau. Resserrant la pièce sur cinq comédiens, dont trois glissent d’un rôle à l’autre, il met en jeu le théâtre lui-même comme pour souligner la cavale en huis clos des deux compères d’aventure, éternels prisonniers du fantasme. Condamnés au recommencement de la conquête inassouvie. « Celle-ci valait bien l’autre », dit Dom Juan en comparant Charlotte et Mathurine. Lyn Thibaut interprète ainsi les trois figures féminines et leur donne sa grâce tantôt rêche, blessée, naïve ou altière. La dramaturgie, qui s’appuie sur la scénographie aux lignes sobres de Damien Schahmaneche et sur les lumières précises de Laurent Bénard, dégagera toute sa clarté quand la troupe trouvera sa pleine cohérence et son énergie. Joris Avodo peine encore à porter le rôle de Dom Juan sans l’affubler des coquetteries de jeune premier et Philippe Bérodot à cerner son Sganarelle, à la fois jumeau et reflet inversé, différent et cependant soudé à son maître. Créée en 1665, la pièce de Molière fit scandale et continue depuis de susciter les exégèses puisées à l’ombre de son mystère : chaque époque l’interprète et lui donne un éclat nouveau, prouvant chaque fois l’incommensurable richesse de l’œuvre.
