« Les inclinations naissantes, après tout, ont des charmes inexplicables, et tout le plaisir de l’amour est dans le changement », soutient Dom Juan à Sganarelle. Si l’on sait que la pièce de Molière a fait scandale lors de sa création, en 1665, l’évolution des mœurs et du rapport à la transgression peut nous amener, aujourd’hui, à relativiser sa charge subversive. C’est la réflexion que souhaite mener Anne Coutureau qui éclaire Dom Juan des lumières de notre époque. « Dans un monde où “les libertins” semblent avoir gagné, s’interroge-t-elle, où le matérialisme semble s’imposer comme modèle, que reste-t-il des fautes de Dom Juan ? Qu’y-a-t-il d’inaltérable – voire d’insupportable – dans sa conduite qui, aujourd’hui encore, nous trouble ? » Reconsidérant chaque scène et chaque personnage à l’aune du XXIème siècle, la metteure en scène a pour projet de révéler « la quête de vérité » dans laquelle se lance Dom Juan. Une quête qui, en remplaçant la morale par le désir, pourrait ouvrir la voie à « un besoin absolu de sens et de transcendance »…
