Tout commence de manière retenue, presque décalée, à la lumière d’une bougie qui accompagne une sorte de lenteur. Après quelques instants de silence, Yedwart Ingey, qui interprète le rôle de Sganarelle, se lance dans la première et célèbre réplique de Dom Juan. Comme sur le ton de la confidence, en-dehors de toute ironie, il prononce les mots de Molière de façon anodine, sans réellement les adresser. « Quoi que puisse dire Aristote et toute la Philosophie, il n’est rien d’égal au tabac. C’est la passion des honnêtes gens, et qui vit sans tabac n’est pas digne de vivre… » Le ton est donné : sombre, grave. Un ton qui, tout au long de la représentation conçue par René Loyon, se teintera de quelques pointes de drôlerie, de quelques accents de tendresse, mais ne disparaîtra jamais totalement pour donner corps aux différents univers (farce, drame, comédie légère, satire, interrogations philosophiques, élans pathétiques…) qui composent la pièce de Molière. Car le metteur en scène propose une vision introspective et existentielle de Dom Juan. Une vision qui, au sein de la petite salle de L’Atalante, voudrait donner naissance, à un « théâtre de chambre », un « théâtre vu de près » capable de conférer à ce classique « l’éclat originel des textes neufs ».
Un théâtre vu de près
Effectivement disposés au plus près des six interprètes de ce Dom Juan (Claire Barrabes, Jacques Brücher, Yedwart Ingey, Adrien Popineau, Claire Puygrenier et, dans le rôle-titre, Clément Bresson), les spectateurs n’ont pourtant pas véritablement l’occasion de jouir des bénéfices de ce rapport de proximité. Car la représentation à laquelle ils assistent – sans conteste pleine de bonnes intentions théoriques – ne parvient pas à concrétiser les ambitions théâtrales auxquelles René Loyon se réfère dans sa note dramaturgique. Ici, point d’étrangeté, point de saisissements ontologiques, point de projections métaphoriques, point « d’espace propice au rêve, à la rêverie, au questionnement sur soi et sur le monde »… Les deux longues heures de ce spectacle s’étirent dans une suite de scènes manquant d’intensité comme d’imaginaire. Et l’on aimerait, par moments, se trouver un peu moins près de ce « théâtre de chambre » qui, dans un tel rapport d’intimité, exhibe ses carences de manière beaucoup trop crue et beaucoup trop criante.
