Depuis 2005, Le jeune chef américain David Stern (fils du violoniste Isaac Stern) et son orchestre et chœur Opéra Fuoco sont en résidence au Théâtre de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Leur premier projet de l’année 2009 est une nouvelle production de Don Giovanni : « Ce qui est très fort de la part de Mozart, c’est la façon dont il engage le public ; le public est un peu voyeur au début, partagé entre l’ordre social d’Ottavio auquel il adhère et la fascination qu’il éprouve pour la liberté que se donne Don Giovanni» confie David Stern. Il a confié la mise en scène de l’ouvrage au japonais Yoshi Oïda, fasciné par la figure de Don Juan. « En allant au plus profond du Mal, il mène une quête de la liberté métaphysique. En même temps, il attend d’être puni » confie-t-il. Dans sa mise en scène, Yoshi Oïda a imaginé un dispositif de théâtre dans le théâtre, mettant les coulisses à vue comme pour souligner les allers-retours entre les personnages et leur rôle, le passé et le présent, la morale et la tentation. Aujourd’hui âgé de 75 ans, Oïda est bien connu du monde lyrique. Il a entre autres mis en scène Curlew River de Britten à Aix en 1998 et plus récemment l’opéra de chambre La Frontière de Manoury aux Bouffes du Nord. Avant cela, à partir du début des années 60, il a été un des comédiens de Peter Brook. Il a relaté ces vingt années d’expérience dans le livre « L’Acteur flottant ». Au cinéma, il a en particulier tourné dans le « Mahabharata » de Peter Brook et dans « The Pillow Book » réalisé par Peter Greenaway en 1996. Avec le concours de Jay Bernfeld (co-direction artistique et chef de chant) et les jeunes voix de Marc Callahan, Jacquelyn Wagner, Chantal Santon, Pierrick Boisseau, Caroline Meng, Marc Labonnette, Frédéric Bourreau, etc…
