Datant du milieu du XVIIème siècle, la trilogie de Don Quichotte de Daniel Guérin de Bouscal (1613-1675) met en valeur toute l’ambivalence du héros de Cervantès, éclairant à la fois sa fantaisie et sa profondeur. « Don Quichotte n’est pas encore ici ce que le XIXème et le XXème siècle en feront, explique Christophe Gauzeran, à savoir un personnage romantique et incompris, seul être pur dans un siècle corrompu, mais il est déjà un héros complexe, à la fois comique et superbe, sage et fou. » Souhaitant élaborer une « farce délurée », une « comédie extrêmement tonique et inventive, [présentant] des personnages composés, radicalisés, interprétés par des comédiens formés au clown et à la commedia dell’arte », le metteur en scène fait se rencontrer le monde du théâtre et celui du cirque. Une façon de donner corps — à travers des numéros de corde lisse, de trapèze, de tissu… — à l’univers merveilleux de Don Quichotte, un univers onirique peuplé d’illusions, de géants et d’enchanteurs.
