A l’origine, Don Quichotte est un ballet brillant créé par Marius Petipa, inspiré du roman de Cervantès, El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, et retraçant l’histoire d’amour de Kitri et Basile. La musique de Minkus fut créée tout spécialement pour cette production flamboyante, ce qui permettait au chorégraphe de placer fort judicieusement des morceaux de bravoures chorégraphiques forts appréciés du public. Aujourd’hui, Nanette Glushak ne change rien à la trame ni à l’esprit du ballet, elle en fait une œuvre en un prologue et trois actes et donne au personnage de Don Quichotte une épaisseur plus dramatique. Pour l’ancienne danseuse du New York City Ballet et de l’American Ballet Theater, rompue au répertoire et aux créations classiques et néo-classiques, ce type de ballet permet de renouer avec le passé du ballet du Capitole de Toulouse, porteur de grandes œuvres classiques, mais très ouvert aux auteurs d’aujourd’hui. Entre tradition et modernité, il est intéressant de voir comment l’écriture d’un ballet comme celui-ci peut trouver une nouvelle respiration.
