Idéaliste, rêveur, amoureux, maladroit, redresseur de torts mal identifiés, fort d’un combat absolu et d’une volonté rageuse, défenseur des opprimés ne sachant pas reconnaître ou châtier leurs ennemis… C’est le Chevalier à la Triste Figure de Cervantès, mythe unanimement reconnu de notre imaginaire collectif. Qui ne le connaît ? Emblème fameux, prompt cependant à disséminer la violence plus qu’une harmonieuse justice. Alors, en ce début du XXIe siècle, qu’en est-il du jugement et du regard esthétique portés sur le Chevalier errant ? Raillerie, agacement, indulgence, admiration, tendresse… Son combat suscite des questions essentielles, aiguës aujourd’hui comme hier. Comment envisager le lien entre individu et société ? Comment réparer les injustices et accepter les différences ? Comment aussi définir son identité ? Ce déviant marginal, si aveugle, entretiendrait-il une fonction indispensable dans le monde ? Philippe Adrien a visiblement pris beaucoup de plaisir à s’emparer de ce fabuleux personnage, si doué pour entremêler la fiction et le réel, pour dévier donc du réel tout en s’en réclamant ! Un imaginaire enchanté, semé d’élixirs fallacieux, de religieux importants, de bourdes énormes, de plaies et de bosses, mène la danse, car le Chevalier rêve sa vie en prenant de sacrés risques.
« Dans quel royaume vivons-nous ? »
Le metteur en scène empoigne toutes les contradictions du noble chevalier, déploie toute la grandeur grotesque et burlesque de ses pérégrinations, s’aventurant dans un imaginaire quasi surréaliste, tout en montrant habilement l’absurde cruauté dont la société est capable – à travers par exemple les terrifiantes flammes d’un autodafé inquisiteur, menaçant livres et hérétiques. Délire, fantaisie, enthousiasme, illusions, dédoublements (deux Don Quichotte et deux Sancho se côtoient), folie, vivacité, voilà ce qui caractérise les aventures et l’errance du Chevalier forcené, naïf et insensé. « Dans quel royaume vivons-nous ? » demande-t-il (question plutôt sensée). La réponse n’est pas dans les romans de chevalerie, mais bien dans la pièce, explicitement, à travers les propos filmés de personnages de fiction ressemblant étrangement à des personnes existantes : les enfants de Don Quichotte (les mêmes acteurs que dans l’histoire), serrés les uns contre les autres devant les tentes du canal Saint-Martin, regardent, écoutent et commentent l’action. L’adaptation théâtrale, réduisant nécessairement considérablement le texte, s’engage donc sur le terrain d’un ancrage actuel. Les comédiens, dont certains handicapés, présents aussi dans Le Malade imaginaire ou Le Procès, jouent remarquablement. Bruno Netter, aveugle, donne vie à Don Quichotte, qui se bat comme un beau diable. Une belle aventure artisanale toute en ruptures où le verbe et les corps se démènent.
