Quelle gageure d’adapter pour le théâtre le roman mythique de Cervantès ! Jean-Claude Humbert ne craint pas de relever le défi, dans un texte qu’il compose pour deux comédiens : Matthias Leonhard Lang et lui-même, sous la direction de Jean-Claude Passerat. Loin des grands espaces de l’Espagne du XVIIe siècle traversés par Don Quichotte et Sancho Panza, l’auteur place ses personnages dans un huis clos, « un décor représentant un enfermement, telle une cave dans laquelle ils se retrouvent confinés et où toutes leurs folies apparaîtraient ». Car au fond, ce que l’on retient du livre, c’est surtout l’évasion dans le rêve, qui s’affranchit des lieux et des époques. Dès lors, même les anachronismes sont permis pour donner vie à la folie de Don Quichotte, une folie qui, selon Jean-Claude Humbert, « nous conduit à son génie, puisque celui-ci n’est jamais très loin de celle-là, et à une saine réflexion sur notre société et la vanité de nos courses vers le pouvoir et la gloire, qui n’ont pas plus de sens que ses extravagances. »
