Roman sur les enchantements du roman, sur le pouvoir tératogène ou féérique de l’imagination, sur la capacité qu’a parfois la fiction d’envahir la réalité, Don Quixote est une gageure à qui veut tâcher d’adapter ses mots à la scène et d’imposer à l’œil ce qui nait dans l’esprit fantaisiste et un peu fol du vaillant chevalier à la quête insensée. « Il existe une variété infinie de niveaux de lecture » de ce roman, remarque Bastien Ossart, « c’est l’apanage des chefs-d’œuvre ». Entre tous, il choisi le prisme de l’amitié pour adapter les aventures de Quixote et Sancho, remarquant que le plus important dans la quête est de la mener ensemble. Trois musiciens accompagnent les trois comédiens, et la musique devient un personnage à part entière de l’aventure : tous ensemble caracolent dans les plaines de la Mancha, comme le rond Sancho auprès du long Hidalgo.
