Coupable idéal aux yeux d’une société largement acquise aux facilités émétiques de l’antisémitisme et convaincue que les Juifs étaient les ennemis de l’intérieur, le capitaine Dreyfus dut lutter contre la machine infernale qui, d’accusation en arrestation, de dégradation en déportation, tenta de le broyer. C’était sans compter sur ses partisans farouches, c’était sans compter sur Dreyfus lui-même, son intelligence, sa volonté de fer et sa foi patriotique inébranlable. Le texte de Pierrette Dupoyet rend hommage au résistant de l’Ile du Diable et dépeint cette personnalité hors du commun dont s’empare David Arveiller, guidé sur scène par Stéphane Russel. Dans sa cellule du bagne, on voit Dreyfus reconstituer le labyrinthe de l’affaire pour tâcher à la fois d’en comprendre les méandres et d’y échapper. Laure Gouget interprète l’épouse, soutien indéfectible dans la lutte contre l’erreur judiciaire. La scénographie abstraite et les musiques de Jan Garbarek et Arvo Pärt contribuent à la mise en lumière du combat de cet homme simple et vrai, d’une grande force de caractère. Un spectacle à l’impact pédagogique et moral indéniable, un cri d’alerte et un appel à la fraternité.
