Le spectateur habitué à consentir aux malices du théâtre contemporain peut soupirer un peu lorsque, après qu’il a attendu dans l’escalier de la salle Roland Topor du Théâtre du Rond-Point, on lui fait rebrousser chemin pour arriver et s’installer sur la scène recouverte de chaises disparates. D’emblée, Bonfanti et Hunstad jouent des conventions et le procédé semble tellement transparent d’évidence qu’on l’accepte avec la bonne humeur de celui à qui on ne la fait plus et qui se croit complice alors qu’il est déjà victime d’une machination retorse, tout en chausse-trappes, où la représentation est à la fois l’objet et le lieu du spectacle. Les deux artistes, auteurs et interprètes, font preuve d’une finesse et d’une justesse hallucinantes, d’une précision et d’une inventivité diaboliques. Ils réussissent le tour de force de tromper leur monde avec l’ingénuité apparente d’enfants jouant à jouer et parviennent vraiment à installer l’illusion de leur « théâtre quantique », dans lequel, comme dans la physique du même nom, la présence de l’observateur modifie le phénomène observé.
Feu d’artifice pataphysique
Les transitions sont élégantes, les surprises sont inattendues, la chute est subtile : en acrobates du verbe, en athlètes métaphysiques, Bonfanti et Hunstad usent d’un trait de lumière, d’une minute de musique, d’un glouglou de cafetière pour moquer les attentes avec le panache assuré d’une maîtrise parfaite, au point que la confusion la plus totale s’installe dans l’esprit : qu’en est-il du réel et de l’illusion dans ce jeu de dupes qu’est le théâtre ? Obligé de se laisser aller à force de se faire avoir, on glisse avec plaisir entre les lignes d’une partition qui semble domestiquer le hasard. C’est alors qu’apparaît la véritable profondeur métaphysique de ce spectacle tout en pépites drolatiques et brillantes. Le temps et son irréversibilité, le présent et sa fugacité, autrui et sa fragilité, les apparences et leur paradoxale vérité, le langage et sa duplicité : autant de thèmes traités avec légèreté, dans la grâce du sourire et la joie de l’étonnement. Bonfanti et Hunstad, incroyables de naturel et d’aisance, avancent en fildeféristes philosophes au-dessus de l’abîme où ils ont mis le théâtre.
