On ne présente plus le travail d’exploration et de valorisation de l’œuvre ellingtonienne mené depuis 2003 par le compositeur, trompettiste et surtout chef d’orchestre Laurent Mignard à la tête de son Duke Orchestra. Alors que sa dernière grande aventure en date, le spectacle « Jazzy Poppins », directement inspiré par l’album « Duke Ellington Plays Mary Poppins » enregistré en 1964, continue de tourner, Laurent Mignard et sa superbe formation sont déjà engagés dans un nouveau projet qui fera bientôt l’objet d’un enregistrement : « Duke Ladies » (sur le label Juste une Trace). Le programme, présenté en avant-première sur la vaste scène du Jazz Café Montparnasse, souligne la place et l’influence des femmes dans l’inspiration de Duke Ellington, des fragrances de la Perfume Suite aux fresques orchestrales The Girls ou The Tattooed Bride, sans oublier quelques compositions aussi fameuses que Sophisticated Lady ou Satin Doll inspirées par la gent féminine… Ce nouveau répertoire mettra logiquement en avant, en solistes, quelques musiciennes de premier plan : Aurélie Tropez (clarinette), Julie Saury (batterie), Myra Maud et Sylvia Howard (chant), Rachelle Plas (harmonica) et Aurore Voilqué (violon).
