Avec ce nouvel opéra, Salvatore Sciarrino (né en 1947) poursuit son minutieux
travail à la frontière des mots et de la musique. Comme chaque fois, le
compositeur a lui-même écrit le livret, adapté cette fois du journal et des
poèmes d’Izumi Shikibu, poétesse et amante du prince Atsumichi qui vécut il y a
mille ans. En cent scènes ? autant de fragments de vie et de moments d’attente ?
et soixante-cinq poèmes, Salvatore Sciarrino reconstitue un dialogue amoureux et
se sert de leur échange épistolaire pour inventer une forme curieuse de
représentation théâtrale où à la voix de l’un répondrait le corps de l’autre : « tout
en entendant les mots de celui qui écrit, on voit celui qui lit ». La mise
en scène en est confiée à la chorégraphe Trisha Brown, qui a entamé en 1994 une
nouvelle réflexion sur les relations entre la danse et la musique.
