Musicien pluridisciplinaire, Pierre-Yves Macé place le son enregistré, document sonore ou archive, au cœur de son travail palimpseste dans la lignée d’un Berio, avec, en particulier depuis 2010, un cycle in progress pour piano et haut-parleurs, un Song Recycle conçu à partir de performances vocales amateurs sur YouTube. Pour le centenaire de la publication du poème The Waste Land de T.S. Eliot en 2022, il en a imaginé une relecture chorale, mixte et polyglotte, pour dix voix enregistrées et transformées, colorée par le souvenir des chansons de Scott Walker. Ce tissu électroacoustique de vers et de timbres est parsemé de traces sonores in situ des objets et des lieux évoqués par le poème – les cloches de Saint Mary Woolnoth ou l’écoulement de la Tamise – dans un geste qui reprend celui de Cage dans Roaratorio. Pour la reprise de la création au Festival d’Automne, l’Eglise Saint-Eustache en propose une version installation avec huit haut-parleurs et une vidéo d’Oscar Lozano qui anime la graphie de la traduction inédite de Joris Lacoste.
