De 1977 à 1995, année de sa disparition, Jean-Luc Lagarce a consciencieusement rapporté, à l’intérieur de 23 cahiers, des fragments de son existence et quelques éclats du monde. 23 cahiers noircis d’aveux amoureux et intimes, d’anecdotes sur le milieu théâtral et homosexuel, de considérations artistiques, d’annonces nécrologiques,d’observations sur l’évolution de sa maladie et sur son rapport à la mort… C’est à partir de ce matériau représentant plus de 1000 pages éditées que François Berreur (l’un des plus anciens compagnons de route de Jean-Luc Lagarce avec qui il fonda, en 1992, les éditions Les Solitaires intempestifs) a conçu un monologue aux accents humoristiques et graves, un spectacle sobre, précis, qui s’appuie sur le talent du comédien Laurent Poitrenaux. Se donnant tout d’abord des airs de sérieux, de concentration appliquée, de grande quiétude, Laurent Poitrenaux interprète un personnage fort éloigné de l’image que l’on a pu se faire de Jean-Luc Lagarce en lisant son théâtre. En effet, pas l’ombre d’une brèche chez cet homme en train d’écrire son journal, pas le début d’un trouble existentiel.

Peut-être, d’ailleurs, l’auteur était-il de la sorte. Après un moment, la question ne se pose plus. Car, Laurent Poitrenaux est parvenu à faire oublier les visions et les projections qui pouvaient encombrer l’esprit des spectateurs. Ainsi, ce n’est plus le double de l’auteur Jean-Luc Lagarce qui se trouve sur scène, mais celui d’un auteur dont on n’aurait pas lu les pièces, celui d’un jeune artiste homosexuel confronté à la maladie, d’un être sensible, touchant, vif, drôle, que l’on apprend à découvrir au fur et à mesure que les jours de son journal défilent. D’année en année, il écrit, il aime, il signe des mises en scène, il tente de se soigner, il s’afflige de la disparition des grands artistes de son temps, il apostrophe ses lecteurs (et ses spectateurs) par-delà sa propre mort à travers un esprit joyeusement facétieux. Avançant vers la fin annoncée de son personnage, Laurent Poitrenaux nous entraîne dans une réflexion d’une grande lucidité sur le temps qui passe. Il le fait sans pathos, de très belle manière, avec un sens de la justesse et de l’économie qui impose le respect.
