Porter aujourd’hui à la scène le texte de Primo Levi est-il pour vous un geste de mémoire ?
Serge Barbuscia : Oui, bien sûr. « Répétez-le à vos enfants. » : je termine le spectacle avec cette phrase de Primo Levi, qui se répète à l’infini comme un avertissement. Mais, c’est aussi une façon de rendre hommage à l’un des auteurs majeurs du XXème siècle. Avec Si c’est un homme, texte traduit dans le monde entier, l’écrivain italien nous conduit naturellement vers le Ecce homo (voici l’homme) prononcé par Ponce Pilate, lorsqu’il présente à la foule, Jésus battu et couronné d’épines. Sans doute un clin d’œil au fondement même de notre proposition.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a donné l’idée d’associer Si c’est un homme aux Sept dernières paroles du Christ en croix de Joseph Haydn ?
S. B. : Le dialogue intense entre la musique et les mots permet de basculer en permanence du témoignage à l’indicible. Pour revenir à la couronne d’épines évoquée dans la musique de Haydn, elle nous renvoie aux barbelés. Deux cercles de souffrances pour l’un entourant la tête, pour l’autre le camp. L’intimité de ces deux souffrances donne un éclairage neuf à ces deux œuvres. « J’ai soif » est le cri de tout homme à travers les âges et les mondes, une soif d’amour et d’humanité.
Quelle ligne artistique défendez-vous à la direction du Théâtre du Balcon ?
S. B. : Le Théâtre du Balcon est un lieu permanent. Nous défendons une saison riche toute l’année, et pas seulement pendant le festival. Bien entendu, nous présentons le travail de notre propre compagnie, qui se trouve au centre d’un « compagnonnage artistique » avec le théâtre. Mais, nous avons également besoin de rencontres et d’échanges avec d’autres compagnies, pour permettre à la « maison Balcon » de rester avant tout une « maison d’artistes ».
