« Eddy Louiss est l’un des quatre vraiment grands organistes au monde ! » En la manière, le batteur Kenny Clarke savait de quoi il jaugeait. Fils d’un éminent swingman martiniquais, le claviériste a occupé les avant-postes du jazz à Paris au sortir des années 50. C’est l’époque du Caméléon, du Chat qui Pêche et du Tabou où il obtient son premier cachet, avec Daniel Humair. C’est le début d’une longue carrière pour l’autre monsieur Eddy, qui s’illustre avec les Double-Six, dans le grand orchestre d’Yvan Jullien, avec les futures stars du jazz made in France mais aussi les étoiles américaines de passage. Sans oublier d’accompagner certaines des grandes voix de l’époque, à commencer par Claude Nougaro. Et bientôt tant d’autres, dont Stan Getz qui le qualifiera de « génie »…
Musicien métis
Jusqu’en 1977, où le prolixe prodige opère un changement radical : après être parti en Côte d’Ivoire, il s’installe dans le Poitou. Dès lors, il convertit son talent de musicien éclectique au tout électrique, tout en se connectant aux musiques métisses. Ce sera sa Fanfare Feeling Multicolore qui dans la frénésie de ses élans généreux ne manque jamais de swinguer. Les intitulés de ses disques sonnent alors comme des déclarations d’intentions esthétiques, où son sens du groove majuscule se conjugue à ses origines de « sang mêlé », pour reprendre l’un des enregistrements réédités l’an passé dans le superbe coffret « D’un jour à l’autre », paru sur le même label que son récent « Taurorque », qui marque le retour de ce totémique compositeur et chef d’orchestre, après des années de galères de santé.
