Impossible de comprendre la création musicale de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle sans aborder l’œuvre d’Edgar Varèse ! Compositeur visionnaire, il participa à l’essor d’instruments nouveaux comme le thérémine ou les ondes Martenot. Il posa les jalons d’une esthétique nouvelle où le son se libère de structures musicales prédéfinies et marche main dans la main avec la science. En voyageant entre l’Europe et New York, il influença toute une génération de compositeurs, de John Cage à Pierre Boulez. Son œuvre fascine encore les artistes d’aujourd’hui. À la salle Pleyel, le compositeur Peter Eötvös dirigera l’ensemble Asko pour interpréter l’intégrale Varèse. Accompagnés par les images de Gary Hill, ils nous en proposeront une lecture originale.
