« J’ai toujours eu une prédilection pour l’écriture de Virginia Woolf, comme d’ailleurs Anne-Marie Lazarini, dont Une Chambre à soi est le quatrième spectacle consacré à cet immense auteur anglais. La pièce résulte d’une commande passée à Woolf, une conférence sur les femmes et le roman, donnée à Cambridge. Et la forme de la conférence recèle forcément des qualités théâtrales. C’est une sorte d’historique de la pensée du féminisme depuis le seizième siècle et la naissance du roman jusqu’aux années 1930. La réflexion se cherche, se construit, avance ou s’efface autour de la femme. Woolf revendique la qualité intuitive de la sensibilité féminine des écrivains femmes. Facétieuse, elle imagine la sœur merveilleusement douée qu’aurait pu avoir Shakespeare. Mais serait-elle allée à l’école et au théâtre en tant que femme ? Non, sans nul doute. L’auteur recèle grâce et humour dans sa capacité à se dédoubler et à porter un regard ironique sur ses aveux.

Lucide quant à ses provocations souvent sujettes à scandales, Woolf s’autocritique entre éloge et blâme, moquerie et dérision. La liberté sexuelle ou la vision homosexuelle dont elle est porteuse est directe. Personne avant elle n’avait commencé un roman ainsi : « Chloé aimait Olivia… » Du jamais vu et du jamais entendu. La spécificité de l’écriture féminine, sa capacité d’accomplissement hante le discours. Pour qu’une femme puisse écrire, il lui faut l’indépendance financière, « cinq cent livres de rente », et une chambre à elle, d’où le titre du spectacle Une Chambre à soi. J’aimerais faire passer sur le plateau ces idées et ces sentiments en prise sur l’imaginaire mais aussi sur le public et sur le monde, d’un lieu à de nombreux autres, d’un bord de rivière à la bibliothèque du British Museum. Woolf détestait tout ce qui est ordre, encensement ou parole universitaire, et j’aimerais que transparaisse cette ambivalence entre le sérieux et le jeu, la gravité et l’humour diabolique. »
