Comment est né ce nouveau projet : “L’écharpe d’Iris” ?
Edouard Ferlet : Mon désir était de changer mon mode d’écriture et de jeux en laissant plus de place à la spontanéité et à la simplicité. J’ai toujours eu un dilemme entre une musique écrite, donc réfléchie, et une musique improvisée, donc plus spontanée. Dans ce projet, j’ai voulu trouver une certaine fluidité dans mon écriture et une interaction plus directe entre les musiciens. J’ai souhaité exprimer une musique plus organique et intuitive, qui laisse place à l’imaginaire. Le choix de l’instrumentation inhabituelle confirme bien cette logique de changement : écrire et jouer différemment avec une orchestration variée et inattendue. J’ai aussi essayé de bouleverser les habitudes de jeux des instruments en leur donnant des rôles qu’ils n’ont généralement pas : le piano n’est pas simplement un instrument harmonique mais aussi mélodique ou rythmique ; le saxophone joue la ligne de basse; le violoncelle prend le rôle d’une rythmique de guitare par exemple…

Pourquoi ce titre très poétique ? On sent chez vous un besoin de faire respirer à la musique de nouveaux parfums, traverser de nouvelles couleurs…
E.F. : J’aime le côté inexpliqué et « non-dit » de la musique instrumentale. Chacun raconte son histoire dans son voyage musical. Le fait qu’il n’y ait pas de mots laisse l’auditeur plus libre. Dans le titre de l’album, je donne une piste, l’écharpe d’iris est un terme poétique qui veut dire l’arc-en-ciel. Nous ne savons pas réellement par quelle magie ces couleurs apparaissent devant nous. Cet arc qui forme un pont pourrait servir de passerelle entre deux mondes imaginaires. Dans ce disque, je n’ai pas voulu mettre de barrière de style en essayant de changer mes habitudes de jeux. Je me suis forcé à jouer moins de notes, pour que l’auditeur se libère des images standardisées du jazz.
Parlez-nous des musiciens qui vous entourent dans ce projet?
E.F. : J’ai choisi Simon Spang-Hanssen, Alain Grange et Xavier Desandre-Navarre car ils ont chacun fait un travail de recherche original sur le son et la composition à travers différents projets personnels. Ils apportent aussi leur identité musicale par leur jeu unique et leur talent de compositeur. C’est un moteur pour moi de travailler avec eux, j’ai voulu leur laisser une place importante dans le disque pour qu’il puisse s’exprimer en tant qu’improvisateur, interprète et compositeur.

Edouard Ferlet est né en 1971, il a été formé à New York au célèbre Berklee College où il a reçu le très prestigieux « Berklee jazz performance award « en 1992.
