Christopher Marlowe, l’autre Shakespeare, que le théâtre a quelque peu laissé dans l’ombre de son illustrissime contemporain, aimait comme ce dernier conter au théâtre l’Histoire de son pays. Ici, plus précisément, en un temps où les rois se confrontent sans cesse aux seigneurs, Edouard II a deux défauts majeurs pour régner : il préfère les hommes aux femmes et l’amour au pouvoir. La pièce écrite par Marlowe suit donc les vicissitudes du roi éponyme sur une vingtaine d’années dans une épopée où l’Histoire naturellement se mêle à l’intime.
Conjuguer tradition et modernité
Ils sont treize sur scène. En jeans, en shorts ou en footballeurs américains, en habits résolument disparates que la costumière se plaint régulièrement de voir souillés par les guerres. Le ton modernise le récit et Guillaume Fulconis a choisi de couper dans le texte profus de Marlowe traduit par Markowicz. Un mélange énergique car le Ring Théâtre veut porter un théâtre à la fois populaire et intelligent, spectaculaire et festif. « Un théâtre d’acteurs qui jouent au plus près de leur public, conscients de leur modernité et ne renonçant jamais à la tradition de leur art ».
