Depuis son remplacement au pied levé de Vladimir Jurowski en décembre 2005 dans la Sixième Symphonie de Chostakovitch, le jeune Norvégien Eivind Gullberg Jensen (né en 1972) est devenu l’invité régulier de l’Orchestre National de France. Parallèlement, sa carrière connaît depuis deux saisons une progression fulgurante avec des premières invitations à diriger des phalanges aussi importantes que l’Orchestre du Gewandhaus de Leipzig, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Munich, le Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester de Berlin ou le Mahler Chamber Orchestra. En France, très récemment, il a fait ses débuts à l’Opéra National de Lyon dans Il Tabarro de Puccini et Djamileh de Bizet. Au concert, sa sensibilité le pousse à aborder des partitions du « grand nord », où la froideur des paysages le dispute souvent à la brûlure des sentiments, à l’image de ce nouveau programme parisien : Danses symphoniques sur des motifs norvégiens de Grieg, Concerto pour piano, trompette et cordes de Chostakovitch, et Symphonie n°1 en mi mineur de Sibelius.
