Décidément Le Bal ne cesse d’inspirer. La pièce sans paroles de Jean-Claude Penchenat, non contente, après sa création en 1981, d’avoir inspiré le magnifique film d’Ettore Scola, vient hanter aujourd’hui l’imaginaire de Mathilde Monnier. Associée à l’auteur argentin Alan Pauls, la chorégraphe ancre l’histoire à Buenos Aires qui est pour elle « la ville où la danse a une place significative et s’inscrit dans un contexte politique et social fort. » De la pièce originelle, il reste le travail collectif et l’absence de dialogue. Mais la différence essentielle réside dans la forme chorégraphique et la rencontre avec douze jeunes danseurs argentins. Assis face à face dans une salle de bal où ils viennent tous les jours et se retrouvent, ils évoluent dans un espace qui, selon Mathilde Monnier, « peut être comparé aux “social-clubs“ dans les quartiers populaires de Buenos Aires ou aux salles de danse de tango ». La chorégraphe a choisi de suggérer des événements historiques (ceux de l’Argentine des années 1970 à nos jours) sans « les illustrer directement par des images mais plutôt [en les faisant] parler de la mémoire des corps, des pas et des chansons. »
