En 1980, le film Elephant Man, de David Lynch, révèle au grand public le destin de Joseph Merrick. Cet anglais au physique difforme, surnommé « l’homme-éléphant », fut exhibé comme bête de foire, à Londres, à la fin du XIXème siècle. C’est cette histoire que se réapproprie aujourd’hui Antoine Chalard. Accompagné de Clémentine Yelnik et Florent Malburet, le comédien-auteur-metteur en scène a voulu porter un autre regard sur cet être à l’existence hors norme. « Bien sûr, la destinée de l’homme éléphant fut injuste, violente et cruelle, explique-t-il. Mais elle fut aussi riche, exceptionnelle et remplie d’amour. Plutôt que de m’attacher à toutes les humiliations et souffrances qu’il a subies, j’ai surtout voulu raconter ce qu’il a reçu et ce qu’il a donné. » Soucieux de s’éloigner « d’un réalisme utile », Antoine Chalard a imaginé un spectacle qui joue d’effets d’ombres et de transparences. Un spectacle à « l’onirisme décalé » qui vise à conférer à cette histoire « une valeur de conte ancien ».
