Onze contre douze. Séparés seulement d’un – presque rien – et pourtant l’un contre l’autre jusqu’à la mort. Car certains jurent qu’il faut onze grains de chapelet pour la prière, les autres douze. Cette « petite » différence sur la récitation de la Perle de la perfection engendra de terribles massacres entre les « hammallistes » et les « omariens », deux branches de la confrérie soufie Tidjani, dans une Afrique traditionnelle sous domination coloniale au siècle dernier. La sanglante querelle ne fut enfantée que par un hasardeux retard : un jour, le Cheickh Tidjani avait manqué le début de la prière si bien que ses élèves l’avaient reprise une douzième fois pour obtenir sa bénédiction. Et continuèrent ainsi, cimentant l’occurrence en tradition. L’administration coloniale française s’en mêla, attisa le conflit en tramant de nouvelles alliances pour mater les agissements prétendument rebelles des « hammallistes ». Tierno Bokar et le Cheikh Hammallah osèrent se parler, et s’écouter, rompre les réflexes de haine, déjouer les ambitions et les manœuvres politiques… choisir la tolérance. Les deux sages payèrent tribut de leur vie.
« La Vérité n’appartient à personne : elle est au centre »
Cinq ans après une première version théâtrale de Vie et enseignement de Tierno Bokar, Le sage de Bandiagara, livre que l’écrivain et diplomate malien Amadou Hampaté Bâ consacra à son maître, Peter Brook revient à cette parole de sagesse. Il a tressé cette fois-ci son adaptation autour du conflit entre partisans du « onze » et du « douze », serrant les nœuds de la fable par des saynètes cousues entre elles au fil du récit d’Hampaté Bâ. Si telle approche apporte lisibilité à l’intrigue, elle tend toutefois à perdre les résonances spirituelles et théologiques de l’ouvrage. Le texte, certes émaillé de quelques réflexions philosophiques et mystiques sur Dieu, la quête de la vérité, la foi…, semble harnaché aux événements et ne fait qu’effleurer les questions essentielles, notamment celle de la religion et de sa place dans le quotidien d’une Afrique autrefois animiste, celle de l’intrication des enjeux politiques, tribaux et religieux. Reste une histoire édifiante, menée par des comédiens qui passent habilement d’une scène à l’autre d’un simple mouvement de l’espace… et une phrase en suspens : « Dieu, c’est l’embarras des intelligences humaines. ».
