Jamais représenté du vivant de Cavalli, son ultime opéra, « le plus amoral de l’histoire de l’opéra », s’inspire d’Héliogabale, empereur romain obsédé sexuel et pervers. « A côté de lui, Néron était un enfant de chœur ! », s’exclame le chef Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, qui voue une passion au compositeur dont il a enregistré deux CD d’extraits après avoir créé Elena au festival d’Aix en 2013. Qui mieux que Thomas Jolly, habitué aux personnages complexes et ambigus comme Henry VI ou Richard III, pouvait donner vie à la légende noire d’Héliogabale ? « Il trouble tous les rapports : le rapport à la sexualité, au genre, à la religion, à la loi », explique le metteur en scène qui, pour sa première collaboration à l’Opéra de Paris, opte pour une scénographie basée sur deux types d’architecture : l’une matérielle, pour représenter les fondations romaines, et l’autre, lumineuse, pour évoquer le dieu Soleil.
