Sept ans après un premier album en anglais réalisé par Benjamin Biolay, la chanteuse et pianiste française Elisa Jo revient avec « Kicks » et l’envie d’en découdre dans un mélange d’insolence et de brio avec les trésors du Great American Songbook. « Oublier le chant d’origine, raconter ces histoires à ma façon, c’était un vrai challenge pour cet album, d’autant que normalement j’écris les textes de mes chansons. Mais chanter des mots qui ne sont pas les siens, c’est finalement très agréable. Le Jazz est pour moi comme les fondations, la base, l’origine de toutes les musiques qui m’ont construites. » confie-t-elle. Pour cet opus, elle n’a pas fait les choses à moitié et s’est installée quelques jours, très bien entourée, dans l’East Village à New York, au Flux Studios, repère de ceux qui recherchent « A vintage heart, in a modern mind ». Dans sa voix subtilement tramée et aux couleurs délicieuses, « Feeling Good », « Cry me a river », « Cheek to Cheek » ou « Stormy Weather », standards des plus balisés, se font gentiment secouer et prennent de jolies couleurs sous influence rock. Court-circuitée par le confinement du printemps dernier, la sortie du disque est réactivée aujourd’hui pour notre plus grand plaisir, et renaît sur scène pour un concert unique au New Morning.
