Vous qualifiez Le Baladin du monde occidental de « fable scandaleuse, diaboliquement immorale ». Qu’entendez-vous par là ?
Elisabeth Chailloux : La pièce de Synge raconte l’histoire de Christie Mahon, un jeune homme en fuite qui, parce qu’il déclare aux habitants d’un village qu’il a tué son père à coup de bêche, devient à leurs yeux un être prodigieux, un personnage héroïque. Tous les hommes l’admirent, les femmes tombent amoureuses de lui… Dans l’Irlande du début de XXème siècle (ndlr, la pièce a été créée à Dublin, en 1907), cette glorification du parricide a bien entendu fait scandale.
Mais le père de Christie Mahon n’est pas mort…
E. Ch. : Non, il n’est que blessé. Lorsqu’il rejoint son fils et que ce dernier tente une nouvelle fois de le tuer pour réinvestir son image de héros, les villageois tournent alors le dos à celui qu’ils avaient adulé. Subitement, ils trouvent la réalité de son geste sordide et répugnante. Le Baladin du monde occidental est une pièce sur le pouvoir des mots, sur la grâce de l’illusion et de l’imaginaire. En arrivant dans ce village, Christie Mahon s’extirpe des maladresses et des lacunes de l’enfance pour s’inventer en tant que conteur, en tant que poète.

Parmi les différentes traductions françaises de la pièce de John Millington Synge, pour quelle raison avez-vous choisi de mettre en scène celle de Françoise Morvan ?
E. Ch. : Car je trouve qu’il s’agit de celle qui prend le plus de risque. Les autres traductions ont de grandes qualités, mais elles sont plus sages. Le texte de Françoise Morvan est le seul à aller jusqu’au bout de la folie d’une langue, le seul à créer véritablement une nouvelle façon de parler en bouleversant la syntaxe, en renversant l’usage habituel du français. Car, pour cette pièce, Synge a inventé une langue archaïque et raffinée, une langue inspirée de celle parlée par les habitants des Iles Aran.
Dans quel univers scénique cette langue prend-elle place, au sein de votre spectacle ?
E. Ch. : Dans un univers en dehors de tout réalisme, un univers de vents et de tempêtes. L’action qui prendra corps sur le plateau pourra ainsi faire référence à ici et à maintenant, mais aussi à ailleurs, à nulle part… J’ai vraiment tenu à faire naître l’idée d’une Irlande poétique et intérieure. Cela, en travaillant sur les notions de suspens et de fantastique. Le Baladin du monde occidental a tout pour faire vibrer et faire rêver les spectateurs, tout pour les entraîner dans la jubilation des mots et la beauté de l’illusion théâtrale.
