« Le projet Babel part de la définition de ce qui m’intéresse dans le travail de la scène : aller investiguer le réel, l’observer avec une méthode précise, pour mener un travail de transformation produisant une métaphore. Le travail d’observation doit être méticuleux, précis et patient pour que le résultat métaphorique ait du sens ; l’objet qu’on choisit d’observer est lui aussi fondamental. Quand j’ai commencé à travailler à La Courneuve, j’ai découvert un terrain d’exploration et d’investigation passionnant, riche de tensions et de questions permanentes, présentant partout des scènes théâtrales. Le rapport à l’institution, à la loi, savoir comment manger, où on habite, qui on est : il y a une matière incroyable dans toutes les histoires des habitants de cette ville. Quand on m’a proposé une résidence à La Courneuve, j’ai donc présenté le projet d’un portrait métaphorique de la ville. Quand j’ai débuté le travail, j’ai passé plusieurs semaines dans un centre de santé. La confrontation entre les différents langages, entre les différentes attentes, l’incompréhension entre les malades et les soignants… Tout cela était inouï et posait une question fondamentale : qui ne comprend pas l’autre ? C’est ainsi que j’ai pensé au mythe de Babel.
Le pari réalisé d’une utopie
Je travaillais depuis quatre ans avec des jeunes dans des ateliers théâtraux en lycée. Nous avions monté plusieurs pièces : à chaque fois, c’était très fort. J’adorais travailler avec eux. Parmi eux, j’en ai alors choisi neuf, les meilleurs, exactement comme j’aurais choisi des professionnels. Je leur ai proposé une utopie : pendant une saison, travailler ensemble de façon professionnelle, en les salariant. En parallèle, ils continuent à faire des études, car c’est fondamental, mais je ne voulais pas qu’ils perdent leur énergie à faire des petits boulots. C’est très important qu’ils soient payés, car je ne leur demande pas moins qu’à des professionnels. Ce travail ne relève ni de la compassion, ni de l’accompagnement pédagogique. C’est un projet qui repose sur la notion de troupe. C’est ensemble que nous faisons le chemin de cette aventure théâtrale, partant de l’observation mais poussant au maximum la métaphore pour s’éloigner du circonstancié et du manichéisme jusqu’à rejoindre le mythe. »
