Comment avez-vous reçu la proposition de Brigitte Lefèvre, directrice de la danse de l’Opéra de Paris ?
Outre le plaisir qu’ouvrait cette perspective de travail, j’ai ressenti cette invitation comme une reconnaissance de mon parcours, atypique car j’ai commencé la danse en Israël tardivement, à 23 ans, sans formation académique, et j’ai longtemps essayé de développer mon activité dans mon pays avant de m’établir en France, voici deux ans.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a frappé lors de vos premières rencontres avec les danseuses ?
Je suis dans une phase d’observation. J’essaie de comprendre leur façon de bouger, de penser le mouvement, la composition, la démarche de création. La rencontre m’intéresse parce que c’est l’occasion de me défaire de mes habitudes, se m’éloigner de mes savoir-faire pour explorer de nouvelles pistes. Je commence par aller vers elles pour ensuite les amener vers moi. Nous avons démarré les répétitions à partir de deux ou trois phrases que je leur ai proposées et qui ont servi de matériau de base. Les premiers essais n’étaient pas évidents ! Je leur ai alors demandé de chausser les pointes. Aussitôt, tout a changé ! Elles paraissaient beaucoup plus à l’aise. Du coup, ces variations d’états corporels ont stimulé mon imaginaire. La création se tisse peu à peu, dans une conversation avec ce que disent les danseurs depuis le plateau. Je n’ai pas de méthode de travail et n’engage jamais un processus avec une conception déjà arrêtée de la pièce. Je suis comme dans une chambre noire, et peu à peu je devine des formes, je perçois l’espace et le dessin s’éclaircit.
D’où vient le titre, Hark ! ?
D’une des œuvres pour voix et luth de John Dowland, compositeur anglais du 16ème siècle. Hark, mot d’anglais ancien, signifie « écoute ou « attention intense ». Les chansons, interprétées par un homme solitaire, dégagent une poésie intime qui contraste avec le groupe des quinze danseuses. La relation à la musique est essentielle dans ma démarche chorégraphique. J’essaie de l’aborder sous un angle chaque fois différent.
Vous signez les lumières. Un geste qui accompagne la création chorégraphique ?
Complètement. Les lumières et la chorégraphie sont créées simultanément. Sans doute parce que je travaille sur un plateau nu, sans décor. Les lumières non seulement sculptent le paysage visuel, mais dessinent aussi les rythmes, influencent le montage de la pièce et participent du lien avec la musique.
