Vous envisagez Hiver comme une pièce qui suscite des sensations de vertige. Qu’entendez-vous par là ?
Emilie-Anna Maillet : Ce texte de Jon Fosse est comme une partition. Il est composé de mots, bien sûr, de phrases, mais également de beaucoup de silences. Et lorsque l’on plonge dans ces silences, on éprouve une sensation de vertige absolu. Ainsi, tout l’enjeu de cette pièce est pour moi de savoir ce qui se passe après, une fois que l’on a fait l’expérience de ces vides, de ces trous dans le texte.
Quel regard portez-vous sur la relation qui se tisse entre les deux personnages de cette pièce ?
E.-A. M. : Une chose est sûre, je ne crois pas à une histoire d’amour. Jon Fosse se sert d’une anecdote pour faire naître un autre monde, une autre dimension. Il y a quelque chose de l’ordre du flottement et de la perdition chez ces deux personnages (ndlr, interprétés par Violaine de Carné et Airy Routier), comme une dépersonnalisation. Dans Hiver, les repères de la réalité sont complètement cassés. L’univers de jeu que fait naître cette pièce se rapproche beaucoup de la matière dont sont faits nos rêves.

Selon vous, comment les comédiens doivent-ils incarner cet univers ?
E.-A. M. : Je crois qu’il faut les amener à jouer de manière très concrète, très immédiate, tout en évitant d’être illustratifs. D’une certaine façon, je travaille en partant du principe que les spectateurs sont plus intelligents que les acteurs. Dans Hiver, ce sont les comédiens qui se prennent tous les murs, et ce sont les spectateurs qui envisagent l’incongruité de la relation unissant ces personnages. Le public rit face à des situations qui, tout en paraissant parfois totalement dérisoires, peuvent se révéler d’une grande violence. L’écriture de Jon Fosse est une écriture qui peut rendre les acteurs fous ! Face à tous ses silences, à toutes ses répétitions, la seule personne qui peut sauver l’acteur, c’est l’autre, c’est son partenaire. C’est d’ailleurs cela que raconte Hiver : l’autre est fondamental. L’être humain a besoin de se raccrocher à un autre, un autre dont la présence vient garantir sa propre existence.
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de faire apparaître, sur scène, des hologrammes ?
E.-A. M. : Pour engendrer l’atmosphère d’étrangeté que suggère l’écriture de Jon Fosse. Je travaille par superposition d’images : des êtres fantomatiques s’installent, regardent les comédiens, de longs silences naissent. La rencontre de ces deux univers parallèles – celui des comédiens, êtres en chair en en os, et celui des hologrammes – crée une poétisation du plateau que je trouve très intéressante. L’art numérique permet de rendre visible l’invisible, de créer le trouble, le doute.
