L’histoire de ce roman ouvertement autobiographique raconte comment après avoir séduit Ellénore, aristocrate polonaise, belle, distinguée et compagne du Comte de T…, Adolphe, héros-miroir de l’auteur, réalise que ses sentiments envers cette femme remarquable n’ont existé que pour satisfaire son orgueil et sa vanité. « Tout comme je me suis sentie plus Cyrano que Roxane, je me sens plus Adolphe qu’Ellénore », avoue l’adaptatrice et actrice Dominique Scheer-Hazemann. Elle précise : « En m’emparant des mots de Benjamin Constant, et en les féminisant, il n’est pas question de se mettre dans la peau d’un homme, mais simplement de reconnaître que l’orgueil et la vanité en amour sont aussi affaires de femme ». Jouant Adolphe et Ellénore, la comédienne ambitionne de révéler la sensibilité féminine de l’auteur, dans un jeu sans manichéisme, à fleur de peau.
