Vous avez dirigé différents ouvrages de Haendel. Quelle est la particularité d’Orlando ?
Emmanuelle Haïm : C’est d’abord le livret qui donne toute sa singularité à cet opéra. Haendel aborde ici la thématique de la folie, à travers les ravages que peut causer l’amour. Ce livret permet au compositeur d’explorer en profondeur la psychologie des personnages. D’un point de vue formel, cet opéra est aussi très riche, car il ne se limite pas à des arias da capo. On y trouve des ariettes, des parodies de passacaille, des récitatifs accompagnés. Et même le premier cinq temps de l’histoire de la musique pour décrire l’hallucination d’Orlando ! Quant à l’instrumentation, elle fait, entre autres, appel à un instrument très rare : la violette marine, assez proche de la viole d’amour.
Parlez-nous de votre travail avec David McVicar, qui signe la mise en scène de cet opéra…
E.H. : J’ai rencontré David Mc Vicar à Glyndebourne, quand il mettait en scène Carmen de Bizet et que je dirigeais Rodelinda de Haendel. J’aime son engagement, sa finesse dans le jeu des acteurs. C’est agréable aussi d’avoir un metteur en scène qui possède une vraie connaissance musicale. Même s’il n’a pas de formation musicale, il a une oreille incroyable : il peut chanter un air du début à la fin ! Avant Orlando, nous avons monté ensemble un autre opéra de Haendel, Giulio Cesare, à Glyndebourne puis à Lille et à Chicago. Il y a un vrai respect entre nous deux.
Quel type de voix avez-vous recherché pour cet opéra ?
E.H. : Avec David Mc Vicar, nous avons souhaité avoir des chanteurs qui aient à la fois des capacités musicales et théâtrales. D’emblée, nous avons pensé pour le rôle-titre à Sonia Prina, qui était notre Giulio Cesare. Elle a la particularité d’avoir vraiment une voix de contralto, ce qui convient parfaitement à ce rôle très grave. Sa virtuosité, sa couleur, sa longueur de souffle conviennent parfaitement à Orlando. Les autres chanteurs ont aussi une relation très étroite à Haendel et à ce style. Nous parlons tous la même langue !
En janvier prochain, vous dirigerez Giulio Cesare de Haendel à l’Opéra de Paris. Vous n’éprouvez pas de rancœur à l’égard de cette institution, où vous avez été contrainte, en février dernier, de renoncer à diriger l’Orchestre suite à un différend avec les musiciens…
E.H. : C’était un constat d’incompatibilité. Mon approche ne correspondait pas à ce que l’Orchestre avait l’habitude de faire dans ce répertoire. J’aurais peut-être dû mieux réfléchir avant d’accepter cette invitation. Il y a beaucoup de déceptions et de douleur dans la vie, et c’est aussi ce qui nous forme. Mais maintenant, la musique reprend le dessus. Et je suis très heureuse de pouvoir jouer, avec le Concert d’Astrée, un opéra dans un lieu aussi magique.
