Personnage atypique, danseur, chanteur et performeur, l’américain Mark Tompkins est un créateur indissociable du paysage chorégraphique français depuis les années 70. C’est en mettant fin à une collaboration de cinq ans avec Lila Greene qu’il crée le solo Empty Holes – la vie l’amour et la mort de John et Doris Dreem, en 1983. Née du désir de travailler sur la lumière et l’ombre, sur l’apparition, la disparition et la démultiplication des images du corps, la pièce introduit ensuite John et Doris, deux personnages qui avaient traversé l’œuvre du tandem Greene / Tompkins auparavant. Textes, voix et chansons croisent ce nouveau spectacle. Aujourd’hui, Mark Tompkins ne parle pas de re-création, mais de réincarnation. Un glissement de sens qui en dit long sur ce danseur qui n’hésite pas à brouiller les pistes, jouant sur l’identité, le double, pour mieux se perdre dans la création.
