En 1977, John Cage performait Empty words, qui détramait un texte de David Thoreau pour recomposer une partition sonore, « au hasard ». Suivant le même processus, et prenant pour fondement sonore l’enregistrement de Cage, Angelin Preljocaj se livre – en mouvements – à une opération de réassemblage qui suspend toute logique, pour nous entraîner dans de savoureuses imbrications. Empty moves, moins connu que des œuvres plus spectaculaires – plus narratives aussi – du chorégraphe, est l’une de ses pièces qui méritent le plus d’attention. Ce projet l’a animé pendant dix ans, de 2004 à 2014 (création de la troisième partie). Une œuvre exigeante, particulièrement ardue pour les interprètes, qui révèle une poésie troublante : dans le vertige face à un agencement quasi-arbitraire, qui met en échec la mémoire et l’endurance, jaillit avec force l’humanité du geste.
