Comme le dit Valentin Temkine, si la pièce de Beckett En attendant Godot accède à l’universel, c’est qu’elle est une tragédie de notre temps. Avec une ironie sarcastique et l’humour du désespoir, Beckett rend hommage aux hommes traqués qu’il a côtoyés. Au-delà d’un contexte abstrait et philosophique, En attendant Godot est la seule pièce de Beckett clairement datée et située, au printemps 1943 dans le sud-est de la France, entre Vaucluse et Hautes-Alpes. Si on se fait appeler Vladimir ou Estragon, c’est qu’on ne veut pas donner son véritable nom. Après l’invasion de la zone libre par l’armée allemande le 11 novembre 1942, Vladimir et Estragon doivent fuir Roussillon, une commune du Vaucluse, où Beckett lui-même se cacha pendant l’Occupation. Quelques mois plus tard, ils sont là encore, tentant de survivre et espérant l’arrivée d’un certain Godot qui devrait les sauver : « Nous sommes au rendez-vous, un point c’est tout. Nous ne sommes pas des saints, mais nous sommes au rendez-vous. Combien de gens peuvent en dire autant ? » Entre humour et grincements sourds, la pièce est un appel à la résistance permanente, un vent que prend en poupe le metteur en scène Patrick Reynard et ses comédiens de l’Eskabo.
