Pour éprouver son obéissance, Dieu ordonne à Abraham le sacrifice d’Isaac. Un ange arrête de justesse la main de l’infanticide et un bélier remplace l’enfant. Mais dans le wagon plombé où le narrateur du texte de Gilles Ségal rencontre le père et le fils dont il raconte les derniers jours, il n’y a pas d’ange pour arrêter la mort… Geste d’amour ou geste de folie ? Le narrateur ne juge pas, sinon en affirmant qu’« en ce temps-là, l’amour était de chasser ses enfants ». Lui l’avait su à temps : c’est pour cela que son fils est toujours vivant et qu’il peut lui raconter, dans un testament en forme de mémorial, les derniers jours de l’infanticide et de son petit. Devant un magnétophone, encouragé par les photos de son arrière-petit-fils reçues d’Amérique, taraudé par l’imminence du dernier départ, le narrateur raconte l’histoire de cet homme qui, le premier jour, demande à son fils s’il a fait ses devoirs, lui explique ensuite, de jour en jour, ce qu’un homme accompli doit savoir, organise, le sixième jour, le mariage de son garçon au milieu des mourants, avant d’aider le petit, finalement, à échapper aux bourreaux : « en ce temps-là, l’amour était-ce tuer son enfant ? »
Le pari risqué d’un minimalisme arasant l’émotion
Gilles Ségal reprend ce texte qu’il a écrit et qu’il a déjà interprété il y a dix ans, dans une mise en scène de Georges Werler. Irène Jouannet l’a adapté au cinéma en 2004, avec Gilles Ségal dans le rôle du narrateur. Cette nouvelle mouture, dirigée par Jean Bellorini, est à ce point minimaliste qu’elle énerve le texte et oblitère toute véritable capacité d’empathie. L’adresse est flottante et le magnétophone semble progressivement devenir le seul auditeur du comédien. « Pauvre fou ! », lance régulièrement Gilles Ségal à l’intention de ce clown éperdu qui préféra s’accrocher à Spinoza plutôt que de se complaire dans l’ordure de ce cloaque infernal qui conduisait les Juifs aux chambres à gaz. Mais le récit peine à prendre en charge l’incarnation de ce héros stoïcien, apprenant à son fils que l’humour et le suicide demeurent au condamné comme ultimes preuves de sa liberté. Rien ne bouge, ni physiquement, ni émotionnellement, sur ce plateau nu, et on écoute, sans vraiment, hélas, parvenir à entendre…
