« En remontant le Niger est un texte ravageur, affirme la metteure en scène d’origine slovaque Maria Zachenska, une loupe à peine déformante avec laquelle Arezki Mellal scrute, comme un entomologiste, le fantasme africain de l’Occident. Un miroir tendu par l’Afrique à l’Occident pour que celui-ci y contemple son reflet monstrueux. Arezki nous livre un portrait au vitriol, une comédie qui tourne au vaudeville, ponctuée de quiproquos, de dialogues décalés. » Circoncisions, amputations, désirs troubles et envahissants, ventes d’armes : cette pièce aux accents délirants donne corps à une drôlerie quasi clownesque. Une drôlerie au détour de laquelle Valérie Baran — directrice du TARMAC de la Villette — entend s’élever « une parole nécessaire à l’appréhension de notre monde, monde où l’autre semble encore et toujours réduit à la seule projection que l’on a de lui. »
