De Jan Palach, icône du Printemps de Prague, à Mohamed Bouazizi, jeune Tunisien dont la mort marque le début symbolique du Printemps arabe, en passant par d’autres suicides par le feu, qui de Saint-Denis à Béziers, de Paris à Nantes, marquent le désespoir absolu de ceux que la société n’entend pas et qui ne supportent plus les conditions extrêmes de leur vie, les exemples d’immolation sont nombreux. « C’est la façon la plus voyante de protester quand on ne peut ni parler ni être entendu. C’est le cri des opprimés de toutes natures. Et c’est cette parole que je souhaite questionner au théâtre », dit Kheireddine Lardjam. Le metteur en scène rejoint en cela les préoccupations du dramaturge Mustapha Benfodil, qui, avec ce texte, « fait le pari de l’intériorité, de l’intime ignition, de la citoyenneté refoulée », non pas pour écrire une sociologie du désastre ou un manifeste politique, mais pour produire une autopsie du corps social, « une autopsie poétique, avec, pour seule médecine légale, la liberté du scalpel ».
