MUSIQUE ET HISTOIRE / MUSÉE DE LA GRANDE GUERRE
Imaginant la musique comme un langage universel, on aimerait croire aujourd’hui qu’elle fût laissée à l’écart des guerres et de la haine nationaliste. On sait cependant que ce ne fut pas le cas et même Debussy emboîta le pas des agitateurs du « joujou patriotisme », que dénonçait l’écrivain Remy de Gourmont. Loin des tranchées, la guerre se joue sur le front de la culture. Dans les tranchées, c’est différent. Les œuvres composées alors sont des chants de deuil et de compassion, comme La Croix douloureuse d’André Caplet, ou bien un refuge dans une musique toute de douceur (Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis de Ravel). Debussy se place à hauteur d’enfant (Noël des enfants qui n’ont plus de maison). Ainsi la musique fraternise-t-elle presque de part et d’autre, en même temps que la contestation se fait entendre (la célèbre Chanson de Craonne au programme de ce spectacle). Mais, épousant la biographie de Romain Darchy, combattant des deux guerres décédé en 1944, ce concert-hommage, qui s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une résidence de l’ensemble au Musée de la Grande Guerre de Meaux, emmène aux portes du second conflit mondial (« On ira pendre notre linge sur la ligne Siegfried »), à la Résistance (Chant des partisans) et aux lendemains du désastre (Im Abendrot de Richard Strauss).
